Why A Growth Mindset Is Essential For Entrepreneurs

If you're wondering how mindset development is essential for your newly developing business or practice, read on my friend. By the same token, if you've already grown your business to the place you want - never mind - Just go relax in a hammock beside the sea on your favorite tropical island! Most of the best entrepreneurs who have begun the journey of living their dreams are simply being and doing more of who they are.
And on this journey all of us must come face to face with a dangerous tiger, an edge, and an obstacle of some sort. Often, we aren't even aware of the real problem we are facing, let alone how we might begin to move through it. Unfortunately we usually don't mind staying warm and cozy inside our "fixed mindsets". It's so much easier to think the way we've always thought and do what we've always done.
But, the only way to achieve goals is to move into the "growth mindset" zone. So what is a growth mindset, anyway? A very forward-thinking educator, Stanford Professor Carol Dweck, writes about this in her 2006 book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. Carol categorizes two very different poles on the mindset spectrum, and characterizes our basic ideas about how we see ourselves:
  • When operating from a fixed mindset, "your qualities are carved in stone." In this place your capabilities and possibilities seem finite and are coming from a place of lack. From this point of view you see your qualities and skills as predetermined. You believe that you will continue to lack what you need to go beyond where you already are. While coming from this fixed mindset you also apply this thinking to the qualities others have, and tend to limit your ability to learn from what others have to teach.

  • Once you adopt a growth mindset, "your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts...everyone can change and grow through application and experience." Of course one's basic intelligence is a starting point, but success comes as a result of effort, learning, and persistence. From a growth mindset perspective, we are always in the "beginners mind" zone, eager to learn and grow, confident that we have all we need within ourselves and the world around us to achieve our goals.
As you are becoming more and more "smart" as an entrepreneur you must develop an awareness of which mindset you are coming from. This will allow you to expand your thinking habits to be able to just "be with" whatever arises. What happens when we become more of an observer of our thoughts is that we plant seeds of confidence. As our confidence develops it grows into curiosity. And soon our business project is moving along very rapidly, sometimes going in strange directions we never would have expected. When we gear towards growth and expansion we open what I call the "heart mind" (more about this in another post). This is a place in which we become more and more compassionate towards ourselves and others as we practice curiosity towards everything - the good, bad and indifferent. When we have this "don't know mindset" amazing possibilities start to emerge. Even the hardships and stresses we meet in the process of being in the moment become graciously accepted as teachers on our path.
In a way, while living inside a growth mindset the goal is not really "where it's at"! The present moment real-life predicaments we find ourselves in are juicy fodder for our "growth mindset". And as we simply allow each moment to unfold, being fully present with it, our own inner wise mind will teach us invaluable lessons. Once you see that you are operating from a possibility mindset, you can quickly move way out there on that limb where many new ideas and connections will manifest for you. This occurs when you have entered into the "growth mindset" zone.
Mindset development is essential for smart entrepreneurs who wish to grow their business to greater heights. In other posts I will offer exercises and strategies for building a bridge to a growth mindset. In the meantime, just remember - choosing to stay in the comfortable fixed mindset zone is mighty dangerous for your business. Discovering ways to increase your awareness of being either in a fixed or a growth mindset is crucial - not only to getting more business, but in living your dreams, period.
You see, having the proper mindset not only determines what we perceive in "the world out there" but it either limits or expands our ability to see possibilities in the first place! I invite you to begin to look for the unusual and unexpected connections you are making.
Perhaps you can become a bit more curious about how these seemingly accidental events relate to the growth of your business and your mindset. And, if you really want to walk the smart entrepreneur's tightrope, give yourself the challenge of doing, thinking or being in some small way, a little bit different, at least once a week. I'll let you figure out your own definition of "different" - but make a weekly habit of it. It will work wonders for your business!

The Best Advice for Time Management

Farah's struggling. She's got a lot to do, and the day just seems to get away from her. The 40 minutes she spent surfing Instagram didn't help her cross items off her list, but it was the only break from work that she took all day.
Still, at the end of the day, she feels unsatisfied and downcast because she didn't complete what she had on her to-do list. Farah thinks she has a time management problem.
Farah's problem isn't time management. It's even bigger than that.
Remember a day when you got three times as much done in the same time frame on the previous day? You had the same number of hours on those days as you did on the 'meh' accomplishment days, right?
We all do. So what got you going on those high achievement days?
Focus.
What makes you focus? Something important you want to do, a goal you want to reach. What makes you focus is the impact you want to have.
Farah's big problem was that she wasn't clear on her intended impact, and she wasn't putting it into action.
I define impact like this: impact is where your amazing self meets the world and makes it a better place. It's about you doing whatever you can to be your amazing self AND it's about contributing to others and making a difference.
When you have your intended impact in mind, you can tear through things that take 3 times longer when you don't have anything in mind but profit or another item to cross off a list.
Impact is your big picture. Your vision for impact carries you forward, with focus. You're more motivated, you move through challenges more quickly, and you're happier!
Your business is made of individual days. They add up to create your business life. Life with impact is sweeter and better. And businesses with impact make more money.
Those are two of the many reasons I work with my clients on defining their intentions for having impact. With impact as your focus, you can manage your energy (and your time) in a way that lets you get things done.
When we worked together on this, Farah had a breakthrough. With her energy and her impact in mind, we created a new way of working for her:
  • She set priorities that moved her closer to her intended impact.
  • She limited those priorities to 3 a day.
  • She did what was most important to her impact first.
  • She challenged herself to get things done more quickly.
The result? More gets done. She feels more at ease, yet more accomplished. She has more impact.
Want to get more done? Focus on your impact. It'll carry you through big projects and small ones, as you make a difference.

7 Goal Oriented Habits of Successful People

Many people wonder how they can become highly successful, not realizing that they hold within them everything they need to achieve all of the success they desire.
Successful people are where they are today because of their habits.  Habits determine 95% of a person’s behavior.
Everything that you are today, and everything that you will ever accomplish, is determined by the quality of the habits that you form.
By creating good habits and adopting a positive behavior, you too can become successful and live a prosperous life.

Successful People Maintain 7 Good Habits

For thousands of years, success in human life has been studied by great thinkers and philosophers.  I have personally studied the subject for more than 30 years.  What I have found is that the very best people have developed good habits.
I have identified seven valuable habits that you need to develop if you want to perform at your very maximum in everything you do.

1) They are Goal Oriented

The first habit is to become goal oriented.

You need to be a habitual goal setter, and dedicate yourself to working from clear, written goals every day of your life, forming daily habits.  All highly successful people are intensely goal oriented. They know exactly what they want, they have it written down, they have written plans to accomplish it, and they both review and work on their plans as a daily routine.

I suggest you learn how to use the 80 20 rule to efficiently work toward achieving your goals.

2) They are Results Driven

The second habit of highly successful people is being results driven.
This is made up of two practices.
  1. The first is the practice of continuously learning so that you become better at what you do.
  2. The second practice is that of time management. This means setting very clear priorities on what you do and then concentrating single-mindedly on the most valuable use of your time.
All really successful people are intensely result-oriented.

3) They are Action Oriented

The third major habit you need to develop is that of continually taking action.

This is really the most important habit for material success.  It is the ability to get on with the job and get it done fast.  It is your ability to develop and maintain a sense of urgency, and a bias for action.  Fast tempo in whatever you do is essential to your success.
You need to overcome procrastination, push aside your fears and launch 100% toward the achievement of your most important goals.  The combination of goal orientation, result orientation and action orientation, in themselves, will virtually assure great success.
I highly suggest you learn to use SMART goals to list achievable targets that you can measure and track.

4) They are People Oriented

The fourth habit you need is people orientation.

This is where you put relationships in the center of your life.  This is your decision to cultivate within yourself the habits of patience, kindness, compassion, and understanding.  Virtually all of your happiness in life will come from your ability to get along well with other people.
The good news is that you can become a wonderful human being in your relationships with others when you decide to.
As Aristotle said, the only way that you can learn any habit is by practicing it on a regular basis.  The more you practice being a truly excellent person in your relationships with others, the more you will internalize those qualities and actually become that person.
Focusing on being more pleasant with the people in your life is a great technique to promote a positive thinking lifestyle.

5) They are Health Conscious

The fifth habit that highly successful people develop is health consciousness.
This means that you must fastidiously watch your diet, and always eat the right foods in the right portions.  You must exercise on a regular basis, continually using every muscle and joint of your body to keep it limber and fit.  And finally, you must have good habits of rest and recreation that will enable you, in combination with diet and exercise, to live out your years in a healthy state.
Remember, your health is the most important single thing you have, and it is completely subject to the habits that you develop with regard to the way you live.

6) They are Honest

The sixth habit is that of honesty and integrity.
In the final analysis, the character you develop as you go through life is more important than virtually anything else.
Honesty means that you practice the “reality principle” in everything you do.  You are completely objective with yourself and with the world around you.  You set very clear values for yourself and you organize yourself around your values.  You develop a vision for yourself and then you live your life consistent with your highest ideals.  You never compromise your integrity or peace of mind for anyone or anything.
This attitude of honesty is critical to your enjoying all of the other good habits that you are developing.

7) They are Self-Disciplined

The seventh habit, and the one habit that guarantees all the others, is that of self-discipline.
Your ability to discipline yourself, to master yourself, to control yourself, is the most important single quality that you can develop as a person.  The habit of self-discipline goes hand in hand with success in every area of life.
If you would like some help staying motivated during your journey to the life of your dreams then checkout these inspirational success quotes.
Every one of these habits, being goal oriented, results driven, action orientated, people orientated, health conscious, honest and self-disciplined can be developed.  You are where you are and what you are today because of your habits.  Your habits have been developing, mostly accidentally, from the time you were an infant.
Today you can take complete control over the shaping of your character and personality, and everything that happens to you in the future, by making the decision, right now, to find the definition of the habits that will lead you to great success.
And when you develop the same good habits possessed by other successful people,  you will enjoy having success in common.
Your future will become unlimited.
